Waiting for the detail
The Central Land Council says it is still waiting on written detail of the Northern Territory Government’s new rental system for remote housing.
CLC director David Ross said when that detail is received from the government land council staff will consult with communities for their views.
Mr Ross said the CLC will be looking for a real differential between the rent charged for urban and remote housing given that the vast majority of Aboriginal people in remote communities will continue to live in housing that is not of the same standard as public housing in urban centres such as Alice Springs.
“We’re not able to judge from the press releases the government has put out whether the new rental system is a reasonable deal for people living in Aboriginal communities and are waiting for the written detail to be passed on to us before we can say,” Mr Ross said.
