Central Mt Wedge is now Aboriginal land July 1999 A former pastoral lease, Central Mt Wedge, 350 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs has been handed back by the Governor General Sir William Deane, to traditional owners under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act. Central Mt Wedge was purchased by the Ngarlatji Aboriginal Corporation on behalf of Luritja, Anmatyerr and Warlpiri traditional owners in 1995. A land claim under the Land Rights Act was then lodged and a hearing was held in 1996. Some 200 claimants showed the Aboriginal Land Commissioner, Justice Gray, the many sites and performed songs and ceremonies during the week long hearing. Traditional owners faced particularly strong opposition from the NT Cattlemen's Association when they tried to establish an outstation on the property in the early 1990's. The Ngalurrtju Aboriginal Land Trust on behalf of traditional owners will now hold the title to the former station. |
