Damage to Wilora ceremonial ground
The damage to ceremonial ground at Wilora, north of Alice Springs, emphasises the need for all parties to be consulted before major works are carried out in remote areas.
The ceremonial ground was damaged during land clearing work for a new tip at the community as part of intervention measures.
The sub-contractor did have a traditional owner present during the works but more appropriate senior men were absent.
The CLC director David Ross said the land council wasn’t asked to carry out a site clearance before the work which would have avoided the problem.
Mr Ross said he’s pleased with efforts to remediate the damage to the ceremonial ground with the Anmatyerr Council to replant the area using CDEP workers from Wilora.
Traditional owners from Wilora have said at a meeting to discuss the issue, attended by the CLC, that they are satisfied with those efforts.
