More exploration in the Tanami

The Central Land Council has signed nine more exploration agreements today covering more than 6000 square kilometres of land in the western Tanami region in Central Australia .

The agreements between the CLC and five mining companies allow for the granting of 27 exploration licence applications in the Tanami.

They will enable the companies to explore the area for minerals, mainly gold.

CLC director David Ross said that these agreements involved several companies new to negotiating under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act.

" The CLC has now signed off on more than 230 of these applications over the years, covering an area of 93,864 square kilometres and the process is comfortable and uncomplicated for everybody," he said. " Aboriginal land is not the ' no go zone' for development that the Northern Territory Government would have us all believe - the traditional owners main concern is respect for sacred sites.

"About 80 percent of the value of mineral exploration in the Northern Territory comes from Aboriginal land and more than 24 percent of Aboriginal land in the CLC's region is under exploration.

Mr Ross congratulated Otter Gold NL, AngloGold Australasia Ltd, Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, Western Mining Corporation Ltd, Delta Gold Ltd & Delta Gold Exploration Pty Ltd on the agreements.

" These agreements are good news for traditional land owners and I wish the companies every success in these exploration ventures," he said.
