Aboriginal languages of central Australia
Have you ever wondered why Arrernte is spelt the way it is?
Many literate English speakers have lots of questions when they first see a word written in Arrernte.Even the name of the language is confusing: sometimes it is written 'Arrernte' (the modern spelling) and sometimes 'Aranda' (a left-over spelling from the old days).
Aboriginal languages
Many Aboriginal adults and children in Central Australia are speakers of one or more Aboriginal languages as their mother tongue. They may or may not speak Standard Australian English (SAE), that is, the form of English that is taught in schools and used in the media.
