Centre’s festival of footy

The Trucking Yards town camp and Yuelumu community took out the division one and two titles respectively during the Lightning Carnival.

The AFL Central Australia carnival launches the football season in the Centre and attracted about 30 teams from across the region, many from small communities, travelling hundreds or even thousands of kilometres to take part.

Trucking Yards, which only forms for special events such as the carnival, includes players who normally play for Pioneers in the CAFL.

Ironically, it defeated Pioneers in the division one grand final.

Darry White, a three-time AFL premiership winner with Brisbane and Alice Springs old boy, made a spectacular cameo for Trucking Yards.

In division two, Yuelumu won its second successive title by defeating Titjikala.
